Writind Drills: Random Word Genorators

Drills are a seriously underrated part of creative writing. They're great mind- and style-stretching exercises, prompting you to explore things you’d never try on your own. Whether you've got writers block, a procrastination problem, or just a bad case of brain-fluff, writing prompts are great for clearing out the muck and get back on track, but aren't so all-consuming that you can't go back to your current work in progress when you're through.

There are a lot of ways to go about prompt writing. My favorite method of late has been the random word generator. Let me explain:

      - ghost
      - productive
      - bawdy
      - ancient
      - clocks

You got all that? Now go—Don't think about it, just write as fast as you can, whatever pops into your head, and see what you get. Is it bad? Doesn't matter, you were probably going to pitch it anyways. Was it good? Great! Save it and get a move one before the idea supplants your current WIP.

Combined with a five or ten minute timer a few of these are great warm-up exercise, or even something social to do with friends or your local writing group.

As for getting your words, that's no problem at all. It's as simple as spouting the first five things that come to mind, or if you're feeling democratic, asking for one word from anyone in your immediate vicinity. There are tones of places online if you search "random word generator" as well. This is my favorite source here:

Inspired by the example? Send in what you wrote! I'd love to see, and I might even stick it into next month's newsletter.
